First LIFE FRONT webinar registers high interest in hydrocarbon standards

 In Articles, Event, Webinar

Yesterday (25 April), the first public webinar about the EU-funded LIFE FRONT project took place. Around 140 participants joined the webinar to get information on the project’s objectives and find out how to get involved in the Standards Action Group (SAG).

The one-hour webinar offered a clear overview of the project activities, including both those completed so far and future actions. A particular focus was devoted to the current situation regarding standards and barriers to flammable refrigerants within the European Union and internationally. The expectations and efforts made by the project partners within the standardisation process in this sector were also debated.

The project partners encouraged stakeholders to participate in project actions, especially by joining the Standards Action Group (SAG). This Group aims to gather around 50 experts with experience with hydrocarbon-based equipment who are interested in the development of EU and international standards for hydrocarbons. They will share their insights and expertise with the project partners and the other SAG members, contributing to some of the key deliverables of the project and enjoying a top-level exchange of technical information. Participation to the group is free and voluntary.

The event was co-chaired by speakers from several project partners. In particular:

  • Dario Belluomini (Project Officer & Market Analyst, shecco) offered a general introduction, presenting the project consortium and objectives, the SAG and the timeline of the upcoming activities.
  • Klara Skacanova (Market Development Manager, shecco) gave a closer look at the literature review recently concluded to learn more about the current European and international standards for flammable refrigerants. She also presented some preliminary findings of the market survey on the use of hydrocarbons in the industry. Participants were invited to contribute to this online questionnaire to share their insights (deadline 30 April).
  • Joachim Maul (director R&D, Ait – Deutschland) offered the perspective and experience of a heat pump manufacturer, explaining why the reform and update of current standards is necessary and how this could trigger new business opportunities.
  • Daniel Colbourne (engineer) explained that the assumptions that determine the maximum hydrocarbon charge size limits used in current standards do not reflect the reality, and outlined the project’s aim to establish a more precise and evidence-based calculations. His presentation focused on new approaches for determining maximum hydrocarbon charge size limits, including the preliminary results of experiments conducted in the framework of the LIFE FRONT project.

The webinar was the first in the series of LIFE FRONT webinars, which will be offered throughout the project’s duration to update the public on developments and outcomes achieved.
